What are the three most common types of primary care physicians?

Family Practice Physicians:
Family Practice Physicians specialize in taking care of the general health needs of people of all ages, from infancy through adulthood. They are trained in six broad areas of medicine - pediatrics, internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, and community medicine.

Internists:
Internists specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of disease in adults. They do not perform surgery, deliver babies or treat children.

Pediatricians:
Pediatricians specialize in taking care of the general health needs of children, from birth through approximately age 16.

In addition, some women choose an obstetrician-gynecologist as their primary care physician. These doctors specialize in pregnancy and childbirth and in the diseases and routine physical care of the reproductive system of women.
