What is Medicare?
Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people 65 or older, and people of any age with certain disabilities.
Parts of Medicare
Medicare coverage comes in four parts. Each part covers different health services.
Choosing a plan
It’s important to understand the plan types before you choose your coverage.
Medicare enrollment
Medicare has initial, annual, and special enrollment periods.
Medicare eligibility
- U.S. citizen or legal resident for five consecutive years
- Age 65 years or older
- If under age 65: Permanently disabled and have received Social Security disability payments for at least two years
- Receive, or are eligible for, retirement benefits from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board
- Had Medicare-covered government employment (you or your spouse)
- Require ongoing dialysis for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or need a kidney transplant
