Contraceptive coverage

For Minnesota plan members

Our plans cover contraceptive care and a variety of birth control options approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The amount you'll pay for these items and services will depend on the type of plan you have.

Covered contraceptive care and services

We generally cover these categories:

  • Cervical caps
  • Condoms: Male and female
  • Contraceptive education and counseling: For help to begin, continue, or end your use
  • Contraceptive patches and sponges
  • Diaphragms
  • Emergency contraception: Levonorgestrel and ulipristal acetate
  • Sterilization surgery for women
  • Implantable rods: Placement, removal, and inspection
  • Injectable contraceptives
  • Intrauterine devices (copper or with progestin) — all durations and doses: Placement, removal, and inspection
  • Oral contraceptives for extended or continuous use: Combined pill and progestin-only
  • Spermicides
  • Vaginal contraceptive rings
