As we shine a spotlight on Mental Health Awareness, it’s crucial to focus on the importance of resilience in maintaining well-being. In the face of challenges, both personal and professional, resilience serves as a vital skill for navigating difficult times and emerging stronger on the other side. 

 

Why It Matters: Resilience is not just a buzzword. And it isn't merely about enduring hardships. Resilience is the capacity to withstand or to recover from difficulties. When we are not resilient, we experience higher distress under pressure. This can derail our physical, emotional, and mental well-being.

Reframing adversity with a growth mindset

In 1999, Stanford psychologist Dr. Carol Dweck first introduced the concept of a “growth mindset.” According to Dweck, a growth mindset is a belief that abilities and intelligence can improve with effort and persistence. It contrasts with a fixed mindset, where people believe their abilities remain static, unchangeable regardless of action. 

  • The growth mindset means recognizing humans as flexible. Setbacks become opportunities for learning and our potential becomes unlimited. 
  • The fixed mindset is the belief that our skills are set, we have what we have and don’t have the capacity to change and learn. While it keeps us trapped by fear of failure, the growth mindset expands the possible.
