Medica 2021 Annual Report Chronicles How the Non-Profit Health Plan Met the Challenges of a Year Marked by the COVID-19 Pandemic, Created Valuable New Partnerships and Sustained Growth

MINNETONKA, MINN – Medica today released its 2021 Annual Report: Meeting the Moment. The report focuses on the stories of what Medica and its Foundation did throughout the year to meet the challenges of COVID-19 faced by the communities and members it serves. It includes details of a new partnership with Dean Health Plan, and such stories as a strategic grant to support the expansion of dental care across northeast Minnesota, new ways to deliver health care and the organization's passion to serve.

"For nearly 50 years, Medica has supported the health and well-being of communities across the country," said John Naylor, Medica President and Chief Executive Officer. "In 2021 the communities we serve were faced with circumstances unlike any we have had over the course of our history. As I look back over the year, I am so proud to reflect on the stories that demonstrate how Medica rose to those challenges and lived out its mission and vision to be trusted in the communities it serves for its unwavering commitment to high quality, affordable health care. I am honored to share them in our annual report."

For Medica, living out its mission in 2021 meant, in large part, dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic and all the disruptions it caused in the lives of the people in the communities it serves. The report chronicles the organization's efforts to do that through examples that showed how it:

  • Helped members and communities through unprecedented challenges – on their physical, social, emotional and family health
  • Made sure everyone, regardless of their circumstances, could realize the promise offered by the vaccines
  • Learned from experiences over the past two years to find new ways to make the health care system work better for everyone
  • Found new partners and strengthened existing partnerships to share in this critical work, knowing communities and organizations are stronger when they together.

Meeting the Moment will leave audiences with an understanding that Medica is a regional health plan that is sizable and growing because of its nonprofit and mission-driven focus. The report demonstrates that Medica is financially sound and that it values relationships and is responsive to stakeholders by delivering on commitments, including efforts to advance health equity and diversity, equity and inclusion. It also is chock full of information about how Medica invests in and gives back to communities it serves through Medica Foundation grants, corporate contributions and employee volunteerism and community engagement.

"We hope that readers of Meeting the Moment will join us in celebrating our values, good work and accomplishments with and on behalf of the communities we serve," Naylor said.
